In 1988 the World Health Organization (WHO) decided that the 1st December would be the World AIDS Day. Recognizing the scale of the problem, in the resolution 43/15 (1988) the UN General Assembly declared AIDS to be a Global Pandemic and stressed that especially on the 1st December the peoples of the United Nations should acknowledge the danger of this disease to the mankind. It also urged all appriopriate UN and non-govermnental organizations to continue their struggle against HIV/AIDS.
According to ‘AIDS epidemic update 2009′ prepared by WHO, there are around 2,7 milion HIV infections every year and 2,0 milion anual deaths due to AIDS.
