Feeling the Power of International Law: Study Trip to the Hague

In recent years, it has become more and more important for young people to learn more about international law, which is why UNYANET has decided to organize a Study Trip to The Hague in August 2017 that revolved around such topics. Read on if you would like to hear about our group’s interesting and fun trip!

Day 1.

After a few minutes of wondering about whether or not there was a sauna in our first destination, we had the honour to step into the Embassy of Finland where we were warmly welcomed by Ms. Katri Viinikka, the Ambassador of Finland Continue reading

Tuebingen International Crisis Simulation

After TICS 2016 it gives us great pleasure to announce that our second edition of this ambitious conference will be held from the 2nd to the 5th of November 2017. Organised in a Joint-Cabinet-Crisis format, this conference will introduce university students from all parts of Germany, Europe, and indeed the world to the concept of MUN and Crisis Simulation, whether they are eager bachelor students with no experience at all, or masters students and doctoral candidates with years of experience. We aim to provide not only an exciting mode of simulation, but also round off the experience with a fulfilling cultural and social experience, right in the heart of the Swabian area. We therefore warmly invite you to apply to this young conference, and thus give us the chance to make TICS 2017 as great as TICS 2016.

This year’s crisis simulation will revolve around current developments in South-East Asia and will primarily focus on the current stand-off between North Korea and Continue reading

Bringing the UN and Youth closer to each other in Slovenia

The Youth Section of United Nations Association of Slovenia (UNAS) was established in 2011 and hosted the UNYANET General Assembly in 2012. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the United Nations and its work among younger generations conducting numerous activities throughout the year 2017.

Jazz Night for intercultural dialogue and international youth cooperation

The importance of jazz has been recognized and celebrated by UNAS since 2011. It is perceived as more than music alone – it was acknowledged as a way of bringing communities together, as a manner of communication that goes beyond conflict, and as a mean of intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and international cooperation. Members of Youth Section organized an event called Jazz Night that took place on 5 May in Ljubljana in which jazz was presented by some of the greatest Slovenian musicians in a form of a concert.

Around Slovenia’s primary and secondary schools, several interactive workshops, considering the topics of global learning, Continue reading

Secretary General 2017, Model United Nations in Italy with Consules

Nicholas Tommasini, Secretary-General of MUN in Rome organized by Consules, Member of UNYANET

What an amazing experience! Being the Secretary General of the Model UN in Italy has been a privilege and a great opportunity for me. Everything began in September when Consules, the Italian association which organizes the MUN, chose me for guiding the national staff through this incredible journey. Hard work and dedication, hours of meeting and promotion all around the country made possible the realization of a conference that has seen the participation of more than one thousand delegates from all over the world. Thanks to my staff and the support of my fellow colleagues of the UNYANET the conference has been a real success. Four days of intensive work, five committees (Security Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, United Nations High Commission for Refugees, and the United Nations Development Program) have become the natural habitat of the future leaders of the international community. The resolutions created were incredibly well done, proving that students motivated in doing something can achieve incredible results. What really makes this experience a dream is that it gathers people who really care about international current challenges of the international community and gives them the opportunity to test their ability to work in a competitive-cooperative arena at the aim of finding an answer to the great problems to which the real leaders of the countries have to face with. From my personal point of view, the role of the SG gave me the possibility to understand the whole process that the MUN creates from a higher perspective. Being involved in the organization of this event means that everything is under your control and you have the chance to decide about the development of this dream. You became the architect of this life-experience, a huge responsibility, believe me! However, when the simulation finished, I definitively realized how important this journey had been for me. The kick-off meeting with my staff revealed for real how much passion we put in realizing the conference. I don’t know if in the future I will have another chance of being a Secretary General but I personally suggest all the students, as I was, to take the opportunity of living this great experience that is a Model United Nations. As the former Secretary General, I would like to invite you to seize this opportunity to learn all you can about the United Nations and imagine how you can contribute to empower the global community to prosper. I am confident that your passion will guide you through this amazing and fascinating adventure and in the days to come. Be brave, be diplomat, be MUNers.

FinMUN: Youth in Arctic Security and the Environment

Finnish Model United Nations conference 2017: The Arctic

Welcome to the FinMUN2017 conference, organized in Helsinki in April 5-8. FinMUN is the only university level model UN organized in Finland. Our specialty is that we are quite a small conference, which makes it easy for the delegates to get to know everyone. Due to this, it is also a good conference for people trying out MUNs for the first time. And of course, we offer our participants first-hand experience of sauna diplomacy at our traditional sauna evening!

This year our theme for the conference is the Arctic. We chose the Arctic as a theme because Finland will be chairing the Arctic council from May 2017 onwards. We also believe the Arctic to be an important region, with a unique environment and geographical location. The region is affected both by climate change and territorial claims. Therefore we want to invite our participants to discuss the Arctic both from security-related matters, as well as from an environmental perspective. Continue reading
