International Day of Peace: 21 September 2012

Today is the International Day of Peace. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says that “On the International Day of Peace, the United Nations calls for a complete cessation of hostilities around the world.
We also ask people everywhere to observe a minute of silence, at noon local time, to honour the victims – those who have lost their lives, and those who survived but must now cope with trauma and pain.”

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.

In 2001, the General Assembly established 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire. More information can be found on the official page of the United Nations.
