MUNSC Salient 2016 Addresses Contemporary Inequalities

The second installment of MUNSC Salient, organized by the United Nations Association of Slovenia, successfully concluded on July 15th. The conference was held under the honorary patronage of Mr Borut Pahor, the President of Slovenia.

The conference took place between July 11 and 15, 2016 at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Fundamentally a youth conference, the aim of MUNSC Salient is to supplement the traditional Model United Nations (MUN) experience with educational content in form of interactive lectures, roundtables and workshops. The 70 participants of the conference hailed from Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden and Turkey. UNA Slovenia issues a publication “Youth and the United Nations” on the International Youth Day

international youth dayUnited Nations Association of Slovenia celebrates the International Youth Day (12 August) by issuing a publication “Youth and the United Nations”. The publication provides an overview of the UN activities in the field of youth and opportunities for youth to engage in activities from the UN agenda – the institutes UN Youth Delegate and UNESCO messenger, as well as the results of a survey in which UNA Slovenia researched the opinion of Slovenian youth on the UN. The publication was prepared in cooperation with the National Youth Council of Slovenia. In the preface, the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth for Youth Ahmad Alhendawi shared his thoughts. Introductory words were prepared by the president of UNA Slovenia Youth Section Adriana Aralica and the president of the National Youth Council of Slovenia Tea Jarc. Authors of the publication are Urška Učakar, Adriana Aralica, Miha Pongrac and Mateja Robnik.

The UN recognized the importance of addressing youth issues; youth is one of the priorities of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. This publication is a result of UNA Slovenia’s efforts to bring the UN closer to young people in Slovenia and abroad. Aim of the publication “Youth and the United Nations” is to provide the information on the UN and to encourage youth to get engaged in UN issues.

Summer School on the United Nations

summer schoolThe United Nations Association of Slovenia-Youth organizes the “Summer school on the United Nations: Youth competencies for the challenges of the globalized world” – a 3-days youth conference which will be attended by young activists aged between 18 and 30 years. The conference will be organized in Ljubljana between10 and 12 September 2014.

Roundtable on women in peacekeeping operations

On Tuesday, May 27th, 2014 the roundtable on Women in Peacekeeping operations took place at the United Nations Association of Slovenia. The roundtable was moderated by Dr. Janja Vuga, an assistant professor in the Chair of Defence Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, and an expert on military sociology and peacekeeping operations. Other participants were Major Nataša Zorman, a member of the Slovenian Armed Forces, Deputy Commander of ISAF contingent in KFOR, Anita Baltić, a member of the Slovenian Police, head of the Slovenian police contingent in EULEX Kosovo and Melita Šinkovec, civil functional expert. Workshops on intercultural dialogue for students of Slovenian primary and secondary schools

The United Nations Association of Slovenia prepared a workshop on intercultural dialogue and is carrying it out in Slovenian primary and secondary schools in cooperation with Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO.

In December 2012, the United Nations General Assembly declared the period 2013 – 2022 as the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was entitled with the coordination of the activities which will seek to promote social inclusion and intercultural dialogue with the aim of improving global understanding in the world. One month in the United Nations Information Service in Vienna

From nuclear energy to political crises and environmental sustainability, from Accra to Yaoundé and from strategic planning to awareness raising events, the United Nations Information Service in Vienna (UNIS) is part of a global network of United Nations Information Centres. It informs the public about the UN’s work, engaging local authorities, civil society organizations, universities, students and UN visitors in its activities. It also acts as secretariat to the United Nations Communications Group (UNCG) in Vienna and promotes the UN goals by reaching out to the media, government entities, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), academia and the private sector.
