International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

In 1999 the UN General Assembly decided that 25th of November would be the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The date originates from the events in Dominican Republic, where on 25th November 1960 three so called Mirabal sisters where brutally murdered. They were political activists who were opposing Rafael Trujillo, the Dominican dictator.

The UN General Assembly invited in its resolution 54/134 the governments, NGOs and other relevant institutions to organize this day events that would raise public awareness of the problem of violence against women.
